Freya and Ellie love hay. However, they can be a bit picky about it; they only eat certain brands, and they prefer long stalks and flowers. The short-stalked hay are either ignored or pooped on in their cage. Recently, I’ve found that a lot of the hay I am buying are too dusty and have short stalks, they’re virtually nonexistent in the eyes of my pigs. Some of them are already too dry, and they wouldn’t eat it. They would just munch on it for a few minutes then leave the rest behind.
Out of curiosity (and a need to please my piggy mistresses!), I decided to try buying hay from abroad and feed it to them. After researching several brands, I finally decided on Small Pet Select‘s Timothy Hay, since it comes in large boxes and will surely last a long time as opposed to buying a bag from other brands.
I went to Small Pet Select’s Amazon page and bought their 10lbs Timothy Hay + 5lbs Guinea Pig Pellets bundle which sells for $40 (around PHP1800). They also have a Subscribe and Save option where you will set an interval for orders (say, every 8 weeks) and get a few dollars off for your purchases. I find this a good deal since 750g of timothy hay in the Philippines costs around PHP250-500 depending on the store, and pellets cost much more than that. Freya and Ellie can finish a whole bag of hay in just two weeks, so quantity is really an advantage here!
It took quite a while for it to be delivered here since I had the box shipped via sea cargo (to those interested in buying guinea pig items from abroad, I’ll discuss this in my next post) but when the box arrived, it was still in great condition. The hay and the pellets were really packaged well by the seller.
When I opened the box, the hay was very green and fragrant, as though it was cut just yesterday! It was my first time to see hay of this quality. The stalks are long too, but not sharp. It was perfect.
Apparently, Freya and Ellie agree with me!
They are absolutely crazy for this hay. The fresh smell attracted them right away, and they enjoyed chewing on the long, green stalks. They finished all of it in less than 5 minutes and were even asking for more!
As for the pellets, they are of exceptional quality as well. The packaging really helped in preserving the pellets’ freshness. The label also contains nutritional facts and feeding directions, which is great. What’s even better is that these guinea pig pellets are timothy-based, which means that it’s perfect for adult piggies!
Overall, I highly recommend Small Pet Select’s guinea pig products. The hay and pellet combo is a very good deal. What makes this alternative expensive is the shipping costs to the Philippines, since shipping costs are calculated based on weight. But if you’re willing to spend additional money to get it delivered to your doorstep, it’s totally worth it. You get lots of farm-fresh hay and nutritious pellets that you won’t get anywhere else.
