Wheeky Piggy

Product review: Oxbow Cavy Cuisine

As Freya and Ellie were growing up, I had a difficult time transitioning them from alfalfa-based hay to timothy-based hay. I fed them Hagen Cobayes pellets when they were still under 6 months but alfalfa pellets are not really recommended for adult pigs so I had to find substitutes. Most of the pellets sold in the Philippines have animal byproducts, nuts, seeds, and oils, which are not good for guinea pigs. I found timothy hay pellet suppliers but the girls are really picky with their pellets so I was at a loss as to what to do. I know about a good pellet brand called Oxbow; actually, I have heard so many positive reviews about the Oxbow Cavy Cuisine pellets during my research before adopting Freya and Ellie, but it’s just very hard to find them here in the Philippines so they have not had the chance to try it. But recently, I found that an online store called Pet Supply Depot sells these pellets so I just had to buy and see whether my pigs will like it!

Oxbow Cavy Cuisine pack

Repacked pellets weighing 4lbs. It’s not the original packaging but it’s good that they still included the nutritional facts in the sticker.

Here’s what the pellets look like. There’s actually a lot inside that [seemingly] small package!

They were not selling the original package so I opted for the largest pack they could give me, which weighed 4lbs and cost PHP375. The repacked version has a sticker with the description of the product and the nutritional facts, which was very helpful! I had a problem looking for pellets with the right mix of nutrients for my pigs so if you were to ask me, I was already quite satisfied with the Oxbow pellets. But, well, those things mean nothing until the girls themselves try it so let’s see what they think…

“Ellie look! There’s a camera!”
“No! I’m eating!”

“I’m tired of posing for the camera. I’ll just dig in!” – Freya

Freya and Ellie finished their pellets even before the day ended, and I was so pleased! With their previous pellets they would just try to munch on one and then they would leave, but it didn’t happen when I fed them Oxbow pellets. So when I saw how much they enjoyed this food, I decided that I would definitely replace my old pellets with this brand!

So, here comes the verdict: Freya and Ellie like Oxbow pellets so much and I have never seen them eat this much pellets before, and seeing them enjoying their food makes me happy. I also like how these pellets offer just the right amount of nutrition for my girls. It’s a bit pricey, though, given that it’s an imported and hard-to-find brand, but if you can afford to make the switch do not hesitate to do so. I give this product 4.5/5 stars! 🙂

      Hello Nikka!

The bag lasts for two weeks at most, since I give them only 1/4 cup per pig per day as recommended by my girls’ vets. Yes, I know how hard it can be, so I’m happy that this post helped! 🙂

Pet supply depot is no longer selling this kind of products. Do you have other resources aside from this store?? . I also want quality pellets for my piggie… I hope you can help 🙂
